When Baltic Yachts was founded 1973 most
of our turnover consisted of what we called ”Standard Models”.
In other words we made female hull and deck moulds for each
of the models, plus
that we also had jigs and some interior moulds made to enable
a production aiming at small series of high performance cruiser/racer
type sailing
yachts.
In order to achieve the performance and handling characteristic
goals we decided to use designs that were of a light to medium displacement
type. A heavier type of design would not have had the same performance
we were aiming for; it would also have put us in direct competition
with the strongest brands on the market at that time. On the other
hand, a super light displacement design would not have had the capability
to carry the interior and equipment needed in order to achieve the
comfortable cruising characteristics. A light to medium displacement
philosophy, with comfortable cruising interior, puts pressure on
the builder to reduce the construction weight in order to reach the
weight savings required without sacrificing strength and safety.
Hence it became essential to use high tech building methods and material.
A very positive spin-off from this is that high tech Compared to other yards producing several production yachts, at that time, our production set-up was different in the sense that we allowed for a much higher degree of flexibility and individually tailored designed yachts. In other words each client could influence the specification and concept of his boat to a high degree. Through the years this flexibility has increased to the point that these boats are extremely individual although the standard starting platform is an already existing model. Some of them have 100% custom decks others a totally different keel system and almost all of them have individual interior layouts. At some point we felt that calling these yachts standard models was not correct and a more suitable name would be “Semi Custom Yachts”. For the clients that perhaps do not have the time and capacity to be directly involved themselves in a full Custom project these Semi Custom yachts offer a slightly “easier” solution at a slightly lower price but more important faster delivery but still the possibility to create very personal projects. |
